Mr. Wendell Bratten DeLoach, 66, resident of Luray Highway near Luray, husband of Yvonne Carrol DeLoach, died early Thursday morning, January 23, 2025, in the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Born September 16, 1958, in Ridgeland, SC, he was the son of Gloria Cooler DeLoach and the late George Elmer DeLoach. Wendell was an exceptional mechanic who worked his entire career, over 40 years, fixing vehicles in the Lowcountry area and retiring this past December from Ehrhardt Motor Company in Ehrhardt. Many people have accredited him with being the "best" mechanic, not allowing anyone but him to work on their automobile. Wendell enjoyed hunting, collecting guns, Civil War history and reenactments, watching NHRA drag racing, and most of all spending time with his family.
He attended Huggin Oak Church of God in Cummings and was a proud member of the National Rifle Association.
In addition to his mother of Varnville, Wendell is survived by his wife of 25 years, his high school sweetheart, Yvonne Carrol Crapse Avant DeLoach, of the home; three sons: Bratten DeLoach, II (Hallie) of West Point, VA, Benji Altman (Kristen) of Hampton, and Ray Avant (Mireille) of Crestview, FL; two daughters: Sasha DeLoach Rotellini of Savannah, GA and Shannon Avant Parker (Mike) of Estill; one brother, Steve DeLoach (Georgia Ann) of Varnville; one sister, Sharon D. Ware of Walterboro; 18 adored grandchildren: Dylan, Tristan, Carrie (Elijah), Kelsie, Preston A. (Elisabeth), Mariah (Jordan), Hailey Jane, Preston M., Marissa, Noah, Abby, Emma, Julianna, Jocelynne, Camdyn, Payton, Izabella, and Kai, as well as two great-grandchildren, Jack and Luca. There are also countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who Wendell loved dearly. Wendell deeply loved his large family and shared a special bond with each member of it.
Funeral Services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, January 28, 2025, in the Huggin Oak Church of God located in Cummings (6586 Yemassee Hwy., Varnville, SC 29944), conducted by Rev. Nelson Foster and Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly. Burial will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery near Varnville.
A visitation will be from 5 PM - 7 PM Monday evening, January 27, 2025, at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry St. W., Hampton, SC 29924.
Family will be at the home located on Luray Highway.
The family requests that those who wish may send memorials to the Sand Hill Cemetery Association, c/o Margaret Mathis, 303 Crooked Creek Road, Hampton, SC 29924.
