Mr. Bartley Wayne Hughes, 73, of Furman, SC died Friday morning, August 6, 2021, in Sprenger Nursing Home in Bluffton, SC.

Mr. Hughes was born December 20, 1947 at home in Furman, a son of the late Bartley and Clara McLean Hughes.  After attending Estill High School, he played football for and graduated from Carlisle Military School.  Mr. Hughes was a deacon of Furman Baptist Church, where he attended his entire life.

After high school, he spent about a year and a half as an infantryman in the Army and served on the DMZ in postwar Korea.  For the rest of his career, he worked in farm supply and trucking, first with Youmans Farms, Inc., and later with Meherrin Ag and Chemical.  He was also a part-time farmer.  Post retirement, he was a willing helping hand around Green Acres Turf Farm and KCT Supply.

Wayne is fondly remembered by his many friends for his love of boating and fishing in the Savannah and Chechessie Rivers and his love of hunting dogs.

Mr. Hughes was predeceased by his sisters, Mary "Dolly" Youmans, Betty Youmans (Bob), Charlise Deloach and Melba McKenzie (Keny); and brother-in-law, Clarence Long.  He is survived by one sister, Jeanette Long of Estill, SC; brothers-in-law, Lynn Youmans and Bobby Deloach; and many nephews, nieces, grand and great-grand nephews and nieces.

Graveside services will be 11 AM Monday, August 9, 2021 in Stafford Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Pastor Brian Toney and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.

Visitation will be immediately following the service at the cemetery.
