Walt Gibbs Sr.

Mr. John Walter Gibbs Sr. of Salkehatchie Road in Yemassee, passed away May 23, 2023, at Roper St. Francis Hospital surrounded by his family.  Walt was born February 16, 1951, in Hampton County, the son of the late Jessie C. Gibbs and Margie V. Gibbs.  He was a claims adjuster and appraiser with Farm Bureau Insurance Company for 24 years and was a lifetime member of Ebenezer Methodist Church in Yemassee.  He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Garey Lynn Gibbs of Yemassee, son John Walter Gibbs Jr. and wife Kathryn of Lexington; daughter Lorrie Gibbs Cook of Beaufort; sister Ann Gibbs Keltner of Gulf Breeze, Florida; son-in-law Len Wilkerson of Chapin; sister-in-law Marian Davis of Columbia; grandchildren Jordan Rye and Thomas Rye; Nephew Hunter Keltner and Niece Hannah Keltner. Walt was predeceased by his parents and stepdaughter, Lisa Wilkerson.

His passions included relaxing on his porch with his beloved dog Dillon and cooking southern meals.  Having never missed a game, Walt traveled far and wide to attend all of John's sporting events.  Walt also loved his job and all the relationships he made along the way.

His Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM Saturday at Ebenezer Methodist Church in Yemassee, conducted by Rev. Gary Finch and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.  Visitation will begin at 12:30 PM at the church prior to the service.  Memorial donations can be made to Ebenezer Methodist Church at 125 Salkehatchie Road, Yemassee, SC 29945.
