Mrs. Vonette Mixson Horton, age 96, passed away peacefully on December 06, 2023. Born to parents Stephen and Lee Mixson, she grew up on the family farm as one of eleven children. She was a devoted member of Hampton First Baptist Church and Varnville First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. She loved gardening and could often be found in her meticulously-kept yard. Vonette enjoyed being a member of the Garden Club in Hampton for many years. An exceptional cook, she often made food for others as she cared for so many in various ways.
Surviving are her daughters Lydia (Joel) Waddell of Greer and Phyllis (Tommy) Belflower of Lake City; sister Margaret Calvert of Columbia; brother Olin Mixson of Early Branch; grandchildren Melissa (Glenn) Adams, Emily (Phil) Brown, Dev (Kristen) Belflower, Leigh Allison (Matt) Kelley, and Lindsey (Matt) New; and 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and eight of her brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday at the Varnville First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Thomas Kelly and Rev. William Crews with the burial in the Sand Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm prior to the service at the church, with direction by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.
