Thelma Hudson Padgett passed away at home Sunday, 20 September, 2020, six days short of her ninety-ninth birthday.
Thelma was born on September 26, 1921 at Early Branch, SC to the late Daniel and Lelia Hudson.
Thelma is survived by her sons Kenneth and wife Mary of Columbia, SC and Vincent of Barnwell, SC; grandchildren Bryan and wife Kelly of Irmo, SC; Joy and husband David Wells of Chapin, SC; Ashley and husband Dave Perry of North Charleston, SC; Susan and her husband Kenny Kight of Barnwell, SC and Brianna Phillips of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and seven (7) great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Danny Hudson; sisters Joan Bishop, Janelle Bishop, Ethylean Fisk, Catherine Whittington, Pearl Malphrus; her adopted son and daughter Val and Loretta Jacobson and daughters India and Natalie. Thelma was predeceased by husband Lewis; father and mother and brothers and sisters (sisters: two unnamed, Ruth and Helen; brothers: Robert, Jervey, Clyde and Clarence).
In the early days of her marriage, Thelma was a homemaker and worked beside her husband Lewis on the farm. Later she worked in a number of garment factories throughout the low-country. Thelma was a long-time member of Mount Olive Baptist Church of rural Hampton County where she served as secretary-treasurer for a number of years. After retirement from public work, Thelma spent a number of years as nanny for India and Natalie Jacobson forming an unbreakable bond with that family.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, funeral services will be private for family members and active members of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Graveside services will be held 3 PM Wednesday in Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, 6581 Old Salkehatchie Hwy., Early Branch, SC 29916. The casket will be opened at 2:30 PM prior to services.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Mount Olive Baptist Church, 21219 Pocotaligo Road, Early Branch, SC 29916 or Crescent Hospice, 10 Buckingham Plantation Drive, Bluffton, SC 29910.
All attendees are requested to wear a face mask and exercise proper social distance.
