Mrs. Ruby Chassereau Avant age 96 of Brunson went to be with her Heavenly Father on
June 1, 2023. Mrs. Avant was born on July 14, 1926 in Jasper County, a daughter of the
late Canie Cummings Chassereau and Tinnie Smith Chassereau. Mrs. Avant was the
widow of the late Haskel D. Avant.
Mrs. Avant was educated in the Jasper County Schools and graduated from Grays High
School. She retired from the Hampton County Department of Social Services after 21 years
of service.
"Mrs. Ruby" as she was fondly called accepted Christ as her savior at the age of 13 and
served the Lord in many capacities throughout her life. She loved her church, Nixville
Baptist Church and was active in many programs including Senior Adults, Women on
Missions, and was Co-Director of Bible School for many years. She loved studying her
Bible, crafting, quilting, gardening, baking and spending time with her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren, they were her pride and joy. Time spent with them
was precious to her. She often referred to her two children as her miracle babies. She was
so proud of her family.
Mrs. Avant is survived by a daughter Glenda S. Crosby and husband Benny, and a son
Moye B. Smith and wife Karen both of Brunson. There are 5 grandchildren, Mockey Terry
Jr. (Stephanie) of Kaplan, La., Brian Smith (Christy) of Lexington, S. C., Laura Wangsness
(Ryan) of Reidville, S. C., Brandon Smith (Hannah) of Hampton, S. C., and Kyle Smith
(Loribeth) of Hampton, S. C. There are 8 great grandchildren, Gabrielle and Philip Terry of
Kaplan, La., Kendall and Ella Smith of Lexington, S. C., and Benjamin Wangsness of
Reidville, S. C., and Lexi, Emma and Walt Smith of Hampton, S. C. There are many nieces
and nephews and friends that she loved and treasured.
She is survived by 1 sister, Maudie Harvey of Hampton, S. C., and brothers, Rufus
Chassereau of Estill, S. C., and Eugene Chassereau of Ohio.
Mrs. Avant was predeceased by her first husband Moye B. Smith, Sr. as well as two sisters
Edna Hull, and Daisy Breland, three brothers, Hoyt Chassereau, Harold Chassereau, and
half -brother Oregon Smith.
The Family would like to give a special thanks, to Rudy Ward and Ethel Malphrus for their special care given to Mrs. Avant during her illness.
Services will be held Sunday, June 4, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Nixville Baptist Church with
visitation beginning at 1:30 prior to service. Burial will follow the service at Hopewell First
Baptist Church cemetery.
