Mr. Roy Reece Wingler, 89, of Lightsey Street Extension in Hampton, died early Thursday morning, July 22, 2021, at his residence.

Mr. Wingler was born October 29, 1931 in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, a son of the late Gordon M. Wingler and Lura Wyatt Wingler.  He retired from the  Maintenance Department of the National Guard Unit in Hampton.  Mr. Wingler served over 60 years with the Hampton Fire Department being the longest serving fireman in the county and was affectionately known as "Uncle Roy" at the department.   Through his career he received many awards and was also named "Home Town Hero" for Hampton County.  He was also a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge and both the Omar and Jahab Shrine Clubs.  After his retirement, he started a second career and worked with the Hampton County Landfill for 20 years and operated his own landscaping company.  He was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are his grandchildren, Ryan Firster and wife Kristen of Charleston and Kaylen Firster Weekley and husband Alfredo of Brunson;  great grandsons, John Asher Weekley and Silas Reece Weekley; and close family members that provided him with loving care, Ruby and Jimmy Nix and Mary and Pat Nix.  Besides his parents, Mr. Wingler was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Nix Wingler; his daughter, Patty W. Massey, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Sunday, July 25, 2021, in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Emerson Wiles with burial in Johnson-St. Paul Cemetery with Honors provided by the Hampton Fire Department.

Visitation will be Saturday from 5 to 7 PM at the Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West.
