Mrs. Patsy Laverne Hughes Sanders, 74, of Benjamin Bannaker Lane near Varnville died Friday evening in the Medical University Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Sanders was born May 1, 1944 in Ridgeland, a daughter of the late Louis and Annie May Williams Hughes.  She was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening, watching westerns, listening to old country music and spending time with her grandchildren.  She was the widow of Joseph "Pedab" Sanders.

Surviving are daughters:  Sherry Bolling of Burnsville, Minnesota, Jennifer Sumler of Bluffton and Sonya P. Collins and husband John of Brunson;  son:  George "Bubba" DeWitt, Jr. of Varnville;   and sister:  Nadine Thomas and husband Carroll of Walterboro.  There are 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Sanders was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 1 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Kevin Mims and Dr. Shirley Dempsey, Chaplain, with burial in the Sandy Run Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Monday at the Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.
