Mildred Sanford Simmons

Mrs. Mildred Laura Sanford Simmons, 84, resident of Glenn Street in Varnville, widow of the late Cecil E. Simmons, Sr., died Monday morning, December 22, 2025, at her residence.

Born June 5, 1941, in Varnville, Mrs. Simmons was the daughter of the late Nathan Sanford and Doris Sharpe Sanford. She was a 1959 graduate of Wade Hampton High School and was a homemaker throughout her life. For many years, Mrs. Simmons was girl scout troop leader. She deeply loved her family and enjoyed cooking, gardening, tending to her flowers, and going to yard sales.

Mrs. Simmons and her husband were dedicated members of Varnville First Baptist Church, where she helped her husband in taking care of the church grounds and maintenance. She was also a member of several committees in the church such as the bereavement food committee and for many years was active in the Sunshine Sunday School class.

Surviving is her daughter, Sherry Crosby (Steve) of Nixville; her adored grandchildren: Cody (Glennda), Amanda (Forrest), Savannah, Rachel, Stephanie, Jacey, Beth (Travis), Axl (Kaylie), Nancy, and Caitlin; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Simmons of Varnville; a brother, Billy Sanford (Libby) of Hampton, and two sisters: Emma England of Springfield, Georgia and Sandra Sanford of Beaufort. There are also many beloved great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces and nephews who survive.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Cecil Ellis Simmons, Sr., Mrs. Simmons was predeceased by two sons, Cecil Ellis Simmons, Jr. and Ricky Simmons.

Funeral Services will be 11 AM Wednesday, December 24, 2025, in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, located at 300 Mulberry St. W., Hampton, SC 29924, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly. Burial will follow in the Varnville Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 AM and last until the hour of the service in the funeral home chapel.
