Mary Pope

Mary Ellis McCoy Pope went to be with the lord on March 7, 2024. She was born on August 22, 1928, to Ella DeLoach and Nathaniel Ellis McCoy. She was the 8th of 10 children with six reaching maturity: Hattie Rushing Thomas, Lloyd Tyler McCoy, Nerine McCoy Rushing, Bernard Lee McCoy Mary Ellis McCoy Pope and Quinton McCoy. They are all deceased now and four died as children. She grew up in Scotia, SC, and attended Garnett Grammar School. She graduated from Estill High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1947.

She married Carol R. (Jack) Pope on May 2, 1948 and they had four children: Jimmy, Linda, Johnny and Lisa. After living in the Cypress Creek area and Hampton, SC, they moved to Savannah and Guyton, GA, Gallatin, TN, and Ridgeland, SC, before moving to the Hollywood-Meggett area. She was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church serving as clerk for many years.

In February 1966, Mary Ellis graduated from Rice Business College with an Executive Secretarial Diploma and went to work in the Personnel Department of the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, SC. She retired in 1991 after 25 years of Federal Government Service. Twenty-two and one-half years were served as Secretary to the Director of Nursing Service at the Naval Hospital, Charleston, SC.

Mary Ellis was widowed in 1990 and lived many years at home in the Yonges Island (Hollywood) area with her daughter, Lisa. After her health started to decline, she lived in several assisted living facilities and ultimately had to move to The Village at Summerville. Linda lives in Ravenel. Both boys are deceased.

She is survived by her two daughters: Linda Davis of Ravenel, SC, and Melissa (Lisa) Pope Sanders (Dewayne) of Hampton, SC; four grandchildren: Mary Sue Warner, James Pope, Randal Davis and Mark Davis; four great-grandchildren: Jimbo Warner, Mandi Bublitz, Alex and Tyler Pope; and six great-great grandchildren: Cayson, Penn and Wills Warner, Ryon Pope, Ellis and Sloane Bublitz.

Graveside services will be held Monday afternoon, March 11, 2024 at 2:30 at the Cypress Creek Church Cemetery near Estill.
