Mary Alice Smith

Mrs. Mary Alice Smith, know to her grandchildren, as "Gram" of 17927 Grays Hwy, Varnville, SC died Wednesday March 13, 2024.  After a short stay in the Hampton Regional Medical Center, she was able to spend her last few days at home surrounded by family, assisted by Agape Hospice Care.

Mary was born September 14, 1940 in Charleston, SC, a daughter of the late Levi and Pearl Bennett Kemmerlin of Grays SC.

She graduated from Grays High School, got married and soon after had two boys. She then started her career with Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton, where she worked until retirement.  She loved spending time with her family.  She was known for her country cooking. She loved Pine Level Baptist Church, which she was a member for many years.  Most of all, she loved her two grandchildren and spending time with them.

Surviving is her son, Jimmie R. Smith II (Sherry), her grandson, Cole Smith, her granddaughter, Jessica Smith Gifford (Branham), and her great grandson, Wilder Odell Gifford.  She is also survived by three sisters, Beverly Shrewsbury, Shirley Glidden (Eric), Janelle Barker and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie R Smith Sr., her son Leonard (Lenny) Smith, her sister Sarah Bennett and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 16th at Pine Level Baptist Church followed by burial at the Grimes Cemetery near Grays.

The service will be conducted by Reverend Heyward  Evans and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.  Visitation will be immediately following the burial at the cemetery.
