Marjorie Avant Varn

Mrs. Marjorie Mole Avant Varn, 101, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 10, 2024, at Brookdale Assisted Living Facility in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Mrs. Varn was born December 28, 1922 in Hampton County and was the daughter of the late Wyman Calvin Mole and Susie Lee Harriott Mole. She attended the public schools of Hampton and graduated from Hampton High School in June of 1941. Mrs. Varn was employed by Hampton County for 27 years, first as a clerk and then as the Deputy Clerk of Court for approximately 20 years.

She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton, SC for many years where she was very active and served the church in many ways. She later joined Friendship Baptist Church in North Charleston, SC, where her husband Henry was a member, until her death.

She was first married to the late Lamar F. Avant who served as the Hampton County Auditor for over 20 years until his death in June 1978.  In 1988, she met and married the late Henry Varn of North Charleston.

Mrs. Varn is survived by her three sons: Rev. Ronald L. Avant and his wife Anne of Rock Hill, SC; Andrew Steven Avant and his wife Ginger of Hartsville, SC; Joseph C. Avant and his wife Lisa of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and her one daughter: Sharon Avant Salley and her husband Robert of Chester, SC; her six grandchildren: Lisa Rains, Amanda Shumpert, Justin Avant, Jessica Smith, John Avant, and Ryan Salley. There are also eight great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her two step-daughters: Voncil Manself and her husband John and Christine Driggers and her husband Curtis. There are also several step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Varn will be remembered for loving her family, friends, and her church dearly. She was an avid reader who also liked to sew, work puzzles, and do crafts.

Funeral Services will be 11 AM Saturday, July 13, 2024, in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Hampton Cemetery located on Holly Street East, Hampton, SC 29924.

A visitation will begin at 10 AM in the Chapel lasting until the hour of service.
