Marguerite Mary Burke Urgotis

Marguerite Mary Burke Urgotis of Locust Street West in Hampton died Thursday morning at Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Marguerite found her love and gift for singing at an early age and was often accompanied in their musical household by her sister on piano and her father on guitar or mandolin.  During World War II she sang at local USO shows in Framingham, Massachusetts.  She married Paul Urgotis in 1947 and raised four daughters.  She had a successful career as Registrar at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury, Massachusetts.  All the while she sang, from lullabies to torch songs and often soloed in the Memorial Congregational Church in Sudbury.

Her singing turned profitable when in her 60's, she founded the Senior Strutters, a theatrical group of talented retirees.  Marguerite wrote and produced twelve successful staged shows, with the proceeds donated to the local Senior Center.  From her glamorous costumes in the shows, she made feather boas and sparkling dresses her trademark, even into her 90's, where she would don a boa for any festive occasion.  Marguerite performed at the Palmetto Theater during the Watermelon Festival and with the Hampton Choral Society.

She is survived by her sister and by numerous loving relatives and friends.  Her four daughters and her granddaughter will miss her every day.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 PM in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton, conducted by Rev. James Porter.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
