Margaret Mills Tuten died June 7, 2018. Born December 29, 1932, at Pine Crest Farms in Furman, SC, she was the daughter of Mills Powell Tuten and Jewell DeLoach Tuten. A graduate in the last graduating class of Furman High School, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Winthrop College. The recipient of a Reynolds Fellowship, she did post-graduate work at the University of North Carolina and further post-graduate studies at the University of South Carolina. Miss Tuten taught for 34 years in Allendale County, and was Chairman of the history department at Allendale-Fairfax High School, where she specialized in college preparatory courses.
She was an active lifetime member of Stafford Baptist Church, where for many years she served as church clerk, an adult Sunday School teacher, and a church trustee. She held memberships in the Georgia Salzburger Society, Hampton County Historical Society, the Estill Reading Club and the former Estill Music and Study Club.
Miss Tuten was a lover of the land, local, state, and national history, and political science. An avid reader and writer, she maintained interest in national and international affairs. She loved all of her dogs through the years, particularly her boxers. She was devoted to her church, her family, and her friends.
Survivors include: Lillian and Algernon G. Solomons, Jr., Julia Solomons Lucas and Keith Lucas, their daughters Lillian and Mills Lucas, Gibson and Lorrie Solomons, their children Eliza and Ben; McKenzie and Leah Solomons, their daughter Maya; Dr. Ronda Bard, Paula Hamm, Honor Hartzog, Barbara and Bill Austin, Dr. Lee Smith, Marion Rentz, Norman Rentz, Jr., Paul DeLoach, R.C. DeLoach, III, Dr. Stoney Denny, Deborah Denny Gahagan, Dennis Denny. She was predeceased by her parents, a brother, Mills Powell Tuten, Jr., and a sister Dolores Tuten Sandifer.
Visitation will be held at Stafford Baptist Church outside of Furman from 1 to 2 pm on Sunday, with funeral services following at 2 pm officiated by Rev. Leonard B. Brisendine and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Burial will be in the family square at Stafford.
