It is with immense sadness that we announce the loss of Charles Maxwell "Mac" McCrary, 37, who passed away Friday afternoon October 25th, 2024, at his residence. He was the son of Glenn and the late Janet Mixon McCrary. Mac was a proud resident of Furman, South Carolina. Born March 24, 1987, in Savannah, Georgia, Mac spent his early years as a child in Estill always up to mischief, pulling good-hearted pranks for a laugh – a trait he carried on for the rest of his life. Mac was a 2005 alumnus of Patrick Henry Academy where he was a star running back. It was during his football career that he was deemed the "Mac Attack" by local newspapers and Patriot fans. Mac was taught to weld by his father and worked in the family business before discovering his love for sawmilling at Elliott Sawmilling Company, Inc. in Estill, South Carolina, where he was a faithful employee for 16 years.
An ambitious and determined spirit, Mac had the knowledge and talent to do anything he set his mind to, including starting a rental properties partnership as well as his own business MCF, Enterprises. Mac was a dedicated and loving husband to ZoE Henderson McCrary and father to their three children he loved dearly: MaryHarrison, Crew, and Ford. Nothing brought Mac more joy than spending time with his family at home on their farm where Mac had become an avid hog farmer, at Land's End at their "Fish Camp", dancing with his wife, or sitting by a fire on a fall evening watching Clemson football. Mac had a passion for turkey hunting and a love for fishing. He was always eager to share these experiences with his children. Mac would always say his favorite place to be was "on the river, as the sun came up over the grass with the water like glass".
Mac was always asked about his favorite "spots" to fish and would respond with very detailed directions on how to traverse the trip to the fishing hole using landmarks and always stopping to ensure the listener was following. He consistently ended the journey with the statement "Okay, so you know where I am talking about now, well that's not it."
Mac loved all people and was always surrounded by friends from all walks of life. He found great pleasure in helping others any way he could. Mac was active in his community serving the Hampton County Watermelon Festival alongside his wife for many years. He enjoyed coaching Patrick Henry Football as well as little league soccer for their sons.
Mac was an active member of the Furman Baptist Church and had recently given his life to the Lord through re-baptism earlier this month with his wife and daughter, MaryHarrison. His sons, Crew and Ford were dedicated to the church the same day. Mac is survived by his devoted wife and lifelong love, ZoE; their three children who adored him so very much, MaryHarrison, Crew and Ford McCrary of Furman, his father, Charles "Glenn" McCrary, grandmother Evelyn McCrary of Estill, sister Karla Harriott (Cary) of Estill, sister Kristan McCrary of Greenville, South Carolina, nieces and nephews Hance, Rowe, Coleman, Lucy, and Bo and a host of Mixon and McCrary loved ones. He was preceded in death by his mother Janet Mixon McCrary, grandmother Betty Cook Mixon, grandfathers Charles Wilbur McCrary and Thomas Conway Mixon, Sr.
The void that has been created by his absence may never be filled on this earth but his family takes comfort in knowing he is with our Lord and Savior and his spirit will live on through his children in all the things he taught them.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM November 2, 2024 at Furman Baptist Church conducted by Pastors Brian Toney and Tim Minchey and Reverend Rossiter E. Chellis. Burial will follow in the Stafford Baptist Church Cemetery in Furman.
A visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Friday evening November 1, 2024 at Peeples Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West, Hampton SC, 29924.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Patrick Henry Academy or Furman Baptist Church in memory of Mac McCrary.
