Lois Terry Cope

Mrs. Lois Terry Cope, 90, former resident of Hoover Street North in Hampton, widow of the late James Irvin Cope, Sr., passed away Sunday afternoon, October 26, 2025, at the home of her daughter.

Born July 12, 1935, in Hampton County, Mrs. Cope was the daughter of the late Jacob Ernest Terry and Virginia "Virgie" Freeman Terry. She was a graduate of Hampton High School and worked many years as a secretary; retiring from Hampton School District 1 where she served as secretary for the food service program. Mrs. Cope loved camping, was a member of the Skeeter Scratcher's camping group for many years and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves.

She was the oldest living member of St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church, where she attended faithfully until recently. Mrs. Cope will be remembered for the deep love she shared for her family, church family, and friends.

Surviving is her son, James Irvin "Jimmy" Cope, Jr. (Lisa) of Brunson, her twin daughters, Lynn McMurray (Eugene) of Brunson and Gwen Smith (Michael Gene) of Varnville; six adored grandchildren: Shelley Ridge (Michael), Michael E. Smith, Jr. (Brandy), Jamison Patrick Smith (Jacqueline), Ryan C. Cope (Jessica), Selena Stone (A.J.), and Amanda R. Cope, and eight great-grandchildren: James Perry Smith, Emily Harper Smith, James Elijah "Eli" Cope, Greyson Ridge, Payton Ridge, Reed Mitchell Stone, Carter Lee Stone, and Jaley Smith. There are also two special cousins, Donna Pitman-Thames (Ray) and Joan Brown (Robert), who helped care for Mrs. Cope in her later years.

In addition to her parents, Ernest Terry and Virgie F. Terry; she is predeceased by her husband, James Irvin Cope, Sr.; and infant son, Jacob Cope, and a sister and brother-in-law, Erlene Terry Avant and Berry Avant.

Graveside Services will be 11 AM Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in the Rivers Cemetery near Brunson, conducted by Elder Paul Tuten, Elder Robert Dobson, and Elder Terrell Harvey.

Visitation will be from 5 PM – 8 PM Tuesday evening, October 28, 2025, at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry St. W., Hampton, SC 29924.

The family requests that those who wish may send memorials in Mrs. Cope's memory to the Rivers Cemetery, c/o Dawn Winn, 4935 Prince Williams Road, Brunson, SC 29911.
