Lois Ann Byrd

Lois Ann Gum Byrd, 66, died peacefully Saturday morning, December 28, 2019, at her home in Summerton, South Carolina.

Lois was born on September 20, 1953 in Weston, West Virginia to the late Leslie Jennings Gum and Carolee Weekley Gum.  She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Okey Byrd, her high school sweetheart whom she married July 10, 1971 in Weston; two children, Kelley Byrd of Batesburg-Leesville and Kimberly Brodersen and her husband Jacob of Hampton; two grandchildren, Calvin Brodersen and Allison Crosby; two sisters, Carolyn (Susie) Determan and her husband John, Hilda Perry and her husband William of Weston, West Virginia and one brother, Jack Gum and his wife Carol of Sykesville, Maryland.

Lois was mother to a special child first and foremost, treasuring every moment together.  She is remembered by her family for being the glue that bound not only her immediate family, but her extended family together as well.  Always the family planner, Lois took charge of any situation and was looked to by all for direction, committed to keeping the families close.  Known best as Meme to not only her grandchildren, but others as well, her great love was doting upon her babies whenever she could.  Lois was an active member of the Hampton United Methodist Church, sang with the choir, and served her community as librarian with Allendale-Hampton-Jasper Library.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday at the Hampton United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Ross Chellis, with burial to follow in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Monday at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.
