Legrande Smith

Mr. Franklin LeGrande Smith, 88, resident of Yemassee Highway in Cummings SC, husband of the late Charlene Gibson Smith, passed away Tuesday evening, March 18, 2025, in the Allendale County Hospital with his family and loved ones near, three weeks after his beloved wife of 67 years.

Born October 23, 1936, in Jasper County, Mr. Smith was the son of the late James Lester Smith, Sr. and Nella Smith Smith.  He graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 1955.  He served in the Army for 2 years. He worked several years for Ruscon Construction in Charleston, SC and later retired as a Combined Trades Supervisor for Parris Island in 1992.  LeGrande was an avid deer and turkey hunter, master carpenter, and enjoyed farming and gardening.

He was a devoted member of Sand Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his two sons, Lloyd Russell "Rusty" Smith (Rhonda) of Hampton and Dwayne Randall "Randy" Smith (Leigh Ann) of Moncks Corner; four adored grandchildren:  Joshua Smith (Courtney), Lee Smith (Amanda), Jarrett Smith (Joan), and Shelby Henderson (Hunter); nine great-grandchildren:  Lilyan Smith, Coy Smith, Willa Smith, Jordan Smith, Christopher Goodwin, Myles Smith, Johanna Smith, Ellery Henderson, and Declan Henderson; one brother; Gerald Smith; two sisters, Gail Henry and Judy Whitely, and a brother-in-law: Rufus Gibson (Frances). There are also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family friends. Mr. Smith was devoted to and loved his family, enjoying time and sharing a special bond with each of them.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Charlene Cleona Gibson Smith; a brother, J.L. Smith, and three sisters: Barbara Kennedy, Nell Mixson, and Deloris Ingold.

Graveside Services will be 11:30 AM Saturday, March 22, 2025, in the Sand Hill Cemetery near Varnville, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly.

A visitation will be held from 10 – 11 AM, Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the funeral home located at 300 Mulberry St. W., Hampton, SC 29924.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Smith, Lee Smith, Jarrett Smith, Edwin Gibson, Tony Thompson, and Terrell Smith.

Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home is assisting the Smith family during this time.
