Laurine Cummings

Mrs. Laurine Varn Cummings, 103, of Hampton, died Monday, August 23, 2021, in the Life Care Center in Columbia.

Mrs. Cummings was born December 20, 1917 in Varnville, a daughter of the late William Henry Varn, Sr. and Alexina Sauls Varn.  She was a graduate of Furman University and had taught school in Providence and Ehrhardt, South Carolina.  Later she became the Office Administrator for the family automobile dealership in Hampton until her retirement.  Mrs. Cummings was very active in community civic affairs and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.  She enjoyed playing Bridge and had been active with the local Garden Clubs.  She was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church and the widow of Jesse Franklin Cummings, Jr.

Surviving are her sons, Varn Cummings and wife Rita of Varnville and Frank Cummings, III of Columbia; and grandchildren, Laura Balgari, Christina Cummings, Courtney Bridwell and Jess Cummings, IV.

Funeral services will be 1 PM Sunday, September 5, 2021 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will follow the service at the cemetery.

The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to the charity or organization of one's choice.
