Mr. Joseph Elmer "J.E." Mixson, 73, of Ram Horn Road in the Cummings community near Varnville, died Monday, September 16, 2019, at his residence.

Mr. Mixson was born June 9, 1946 in Ridgeland, a son of the late Joseph Edward Mixson and Mildred Mixson.  He had retired after 28 years of service as an Investigator with the South Carolina Department of Labor.  He was the owner and operator of Tall Pines Shooting Preserve in Cummings, enjoyed quail hunting, fishing and was a member of Deep Branch Baptist Church.  He was instrumental in starting the Cummings Fire Department in 1985.

Surviving are his wife:  Lorraine Bazzle Mixson of Varnville; son:  Joshua Edward Mixson and wife Amy of Varnville; grandson:  Jesse David Mixson, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday in Deep Branch Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Glen Samples with burial in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to the Deep Branch Baptist Church Building Fund, 848 Ficken Road, Early Branch, SC 29916.
