Mr. John Rufus Smith, 78, of Pond Town Road near Brunson, died Sunday evening, November 24, 2019 at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. Smith was born May 29, 1941 in Grays, a son of the late Preston Rufus Smith and Hattie Robinson Smith.  He had retired from Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton as a Press Operator and was a member of the Hampton Church of God of Prophecy.  He had served in the National Guard and enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Lee Marsh Smith of Brunson; sons:  David Smith and wife Anne of Houston, Texas and Jeff Smith and wife Toby of Summerville; brothers:  Gettis Smith and wife Virginia of Grays and Tommy Smith of Grays;  sisters:  Helen Crosby of Brunson and Bobbie Jean Kinard and husband Harry of Grays;  and a brother-in-law:  Olin Mixson of Grays.  There are 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  Mr. Smith was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Louise Mixson.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Wednesday in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Gilbert Linder with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 PM at the Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.
