James “Jimmy” Wise

Mr. James "Jimmy" Wise, 76, resident of First Street in Varnville, passed away peacefully, Saturday, November 2, 2024, at MUSC Ashley Tower in Charleston.

Born August 27, 1948, in Youngstown, Ohio, Jimmy grew up in Savannah and graduated from Groves High School and attended Armstrong State College. He then served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. Jimmy was employed by Seaboard Coast Line Railroad for 19 years while also working 37 years with the U.S. Postal Service, serving his Route 2 customers faithfully. It was said that while with the postal service, neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night swayed this courageous courier's mission from the swift completion of his appointed rounds. He was known to delay his family's Christmas mornings to deliver late gift arrivals to the children on his routes. His standard of service and dedication will be long remembered and hard to surpass.

Jimmy was an avid Clemson Football fan and a reader of his daily Post and Courier. He loved golfing with his 10:30 Tee Time buddies, fishing, his fur babies Leo and Buddy, and his dear friends Jimmy Fitts, Jim Whitten, and Rocky Hudson. He adored his family and took great pride and joy in their many accomplishments. He was a member of Spirit of Life Ministries in Varnville.

His memory will always be cherished by his love at first sight, his wife of 56 years, Paula Wooten Wise; their sons, Doug and his wife Vicki of Ridgeland, Drayton and his wife Amy of Summit, New Jersey, and David and his wife Kelli of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Drew, Leighton, Anderson, and Isabel Wise, and a sister and brother-in-law Debra and Dennis Hoppe and their children Adah and Seth of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.

Jimmy was predeceased by his sister Jan Hendry, and his father and mother-in-love, John and Martha Wooten.

Drew Wise shared this tribute to his grandfather: "He was a pillar of strong, unwavering love. His stories, filled with wisdom, humor, and wit, shaped our lives in ways we'll cherish forever."

Memorial Services will be held 3 PM, Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Spirit of Life Ministries located at 235 Chanel Drive in Varnville, SC 29944 conducted by Pastor David Schaffer.

A visitation will begin at 2 PM and last until the hour of service in the sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jimmy's honor to Spirit of Life Ministries and/or the American Heart Association.
