James Edward Bunton of Beaufort, SC, passed away at home under the care of Compassus Hospice on May 20, 2026.
He was born at Ridgeland Hospital on June 27, 1943, to Jasper Leon Bunton and Lou Ellen Tillman Bunton. He graduated from Beaufort High School at the age of 16. At 17, he began a machinist apprenticeship at Charleston Naval Shipyard. He retired from Civil Service as Operations Officer for the Maintenance Department at Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot. He also served 14 years in the U S Air Force Reserves.
He was married to Joyce Peeples Bunton for 63 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Becky Woods (David) of Mt. Pleasant, a son Bobby Bunton of Beaufort, a sister Libby Kuhn (Bill) of Beaufort, and a brother-in-law Harold "Red" Peeples (Jane) of Rock Hill. His grandchildren are Haley Woods of Moncks Corner, and Holden and Harrison Woods of McClellanville. There are many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Donnie DeLoach, and two brothers, Johnny and Mickey Bunton.
He was a member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort where he served as a deacon and taught discipleship classes. As a member of Gideons International, he was the Memorial Bible Chairman for many years. He loved people, especially children who were drawn to his kindness and gentle spirit. Some of his happiest times were spent at the river with family and friends, patiently teaching many to ski. He was a jack of all trades who could repair most anything with little to work with. Because of his resourcefulness, he was affectionally called "McGyver," by family members.
He will be welcomed in heaven by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and many who also believed because he shared his faith with them.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 27 at The Baptist Church of Beaufort.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214 or The Baptist Church of Beaufort.
Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home is assisting the Bunton family during this time.
