Evelyn Jarrell Griner

Mrs. Mary Evelyn Jarrell Griner, 89, widow of Floyd Monroe Griner and resident of Browing Gate Road near Varnville, SC, died late Sunday night, August 9, 2026, at Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA.

Born November 21, 1936, at her family home near Cummings in Hampton County, SC, Mrs. Griner was the daughter of the late Ervin Terry Jarrell and Mary Eva Mock Jarrell. One of nine children, she was a 1954 graduate of Varnville High School which was the school’s last graduating class. Mrs. Griner worked in various capacities over her life – notably for Westinghouse/International Paper where she retired. She also worked alongside her husband on the family farm helping with whatever she could. Mrs. Griner was an outgoing person who loved people, her church, but most importantly her family.

Mrs. Griner was a dedicated member of Mt. Carmel Methodist Church where she served as the church Treasurer and in many other capacities over the years. She was involved in all church activities, remaining active until recently. Additionally, Mrs. Griner was a member of FCL with Clemson Extension as well as part of various other organizations and clubs over the years.

Surviving are her two sons, Ronald F. Griner (Natalie Lewis) and Jimmie Griner (Cheri) both of Varnville, SC; her three grandsons, Gill Griner of Chicago, IL, Garrett Griner of Pendleton, SC, and John Gardner Griner of Clemson, SC; one brother, Oliver Jarrell of Rock Hill, SC, and one sister, Linda Crapse of Estill, SC. There are also many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who survive.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Floyd Monroe Griner, Mrs. Griner was predeceased by four sisters: Margaret Bailey, Louise McAlhaney, Annette Griner, and Laverne Bishop, as well as two brothers, Richard Jarrell and David “Casey” Jarrell.

Funeral Services will be 11 AM Friday, August 14, 2026, in the Mt. Carmel Methodist Church located on Browning Gate Road near Varnville, SC, conducted by Rev. Dewey Shaffer. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 PM – 7 PM Thursday evening, August 13, 2026, at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Hampton Chapel, located at 300 Mulberry St. W., Hampton, SC 29924.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish send memorials to Mt. Carmel Methodist Church, 7784 Browning Gate Rd., Estill, SC 29918 or the Lewis Cancer Center in Savannah, GA; 225 Candler Dr., Savannah, GA 31405.
