Ethel Lucille Compton Moss

Ethel Lucille Compton Moss entered her heavenly home after an extended illness on July 7, 2023 at Allendale, SC Hospital.

Ethel was born in Charleston, SC on July 3, 1928 at St. Francis Hospital. Daughter of Annie Carolina Anderson and Osborn Leighton Compton. Graduated from Varnville School on May 28, 1945. She started her long working career at Southern Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator in Orangeburg, SC where she met Walter Samuel Clackum on March 20,1946 and married at the courthouse.

On December 3,1950 their daughter Nella Ann Clackum was born, married Moye Marvin Crapse on May 12, 1972 and had one son, Marvin Ryan (Skeeter) Crapse on March 20, 1974.

A son, Walter Samuel Clackum Jr.(Sammy) born August 26, 1952 married three times. He had four children, three boys and one daughter. Sammy passed away on November 6, 2009 in Dallas, TX.

Homer Ardell Clackum born July 16,1954 married Edith Slowman August 4, 1973. They had two children, a daughter, Anita and a son, Jonathan. Ardell passed away on January 27,1985.

Ethel's nursing career started at Varnville General Hospital (1958-1961) working for numerous doctors' offices as well as in homecare, babysitting, secretary and she also volunteered until 1984. She was independent, strong willed, witty, feisty, compassionate, a hard worker. These traits helped her to deal with life's challenges to reach her 95th birthday July 3, 2023.

There are several grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She enjoyed dancing, Find A Word books, traveling and was known for her Lemon Glazed Pound Cake and Fruit Cakes.

Graveside services will be 11 A.M. Tuesday in the Anderson Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Brian Toney, and directed by
Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.
Visitation will immediately follow the services at the Cemetery.
