Ellen Andrews Maner

Ellen Andrews Maner, after an extended illness, departed this life on March 1, 2025, to meet her Lord and Savior. She was at her home and was surrounded by her family when she departed. Ellen was 77.

Ellen was born in Charleston, SC on September 22, 1947, to her birthmother Nadia (Dawson) Hasty. Soon after birth, she was adopted by Walter Henry Andrews, Jr. and his wife Marion Hiers Andrews. The young family moved to Atlanta, Georgia for a period and after the untimely death of Marion in 1953, Ellen was sent to live for a year with her maternal grandmother, Jennie Hiers, in Round-O, SC. Ellen was adopted a second time by Walter's second wife, Catherine Vaughn Andrews. The new couple and Ellen then moved to Summerville, where Ellen was educated in the Summerville Public Schools.

She graduated from Greenbriar Junior College in 1966, and from Ashland College (University) in 1969 to enter the profession of education. Ellen taught her first year in Moncks Corner, and the next 29 years at Hampton Elementary School in the fourth grade. She retired in 1999, but she continued serving education years after retirement as a substitute teacher.

Ellen touched the lives of many students with her love of children and her unique teaching style. Most loved was her reading of stories to her students in her classroom after lunch. One such book her students loved to hear her read was Super Fudge.

She was a faithful and active members of Hampton United Methodist Church where she served in the youth areas of ministry; MYF, Vacation Bible School, and Sunday School. She was also a "regular" on the parsonage committee.

Ellen will remain in the hearts of all who knew her for her tremendous love; love for her children, her husband, and her friends; her love of babies and all children; her love of her pets and especially the homeless pets of the Hampton County Animal Shelter; her love of teaching school; her love of home seasonal decorating, especially at Christmas time; her love of the Clemson Tiger football team; and her love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Lawton Maner, of the home; one son, Wyman L. Maner of Garnett; one daughter, Catherine P. Culpepper (Shelton) of St. George. And one granddaughter, Sarah Culpepper of St. George. There is also one sister, Diana Blair of Atlanta, GA; one brother, Stuart Hasty of Mableton, GA; one brother-in-law, Jimmy Maner of Lexington; two sisters-in-law, Anne M. Clardy of Isle of Palms and Sue W. Maner of Lexington. Ellen is also survived by five nieces and their families.

Ellen was preceded in death by her birthmother, by her adopted father, by her two adopted mothers, by her two brothers-in-law, Cermette J. Clardy, Jr. of Isle of Palms and Bryan Blair of Macon, and one sister-in-law of Mableton, Carol Hasty.

The family would like to recognize and thank the medical professionals of Agape' Hospice for the excellent care they rendered in taking care of Ellen for over five years. Nurse Adrienne Land and Nurse Terry Sharp were two of the very best. We would also like to thank Ellen's caregivers at home for the past several years. Chief among them were Ms. Sylvia Priester, Ms. Kim Russell, Ms. Colleen Russell, Ms. Terry Lynn Jarrell, and Ms. Sharhonda Dickerson, all of whom we considered "angels".

Memorial Services will be held 1 PM Friday, March 7, 2025, in the Hampton United Methodist Church located at 204 Elm St. W., Hampton, SC 29924.

The family will receive visitors from 5 PM – 7 PM Thursday evening, March 6, 2025, at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Hampton Chapel located at 300 Mulberry St. W., Hampton, SC 29924.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ellen's memory to the Hampton County Animal Shelter, 460 Cemetery Rd., Varnville, SC 29944.
