Mrs. Martha "Eleanor" Mayfield Wright, 99 of Varnville and Gilbert, died Monday night in the Lexington Extended Care facility, Lexington, SC.
Eleanor was born in Denmark, SC a daughter of the late Marion Edith Riley and William Dowling Mayfield. She was a 1945 graduate of Winthrop College. She taught high school home economics and also elementary level grades in Hampton County schools throughout her career. She married the love of her life, Jacob M. Wright of Ward, SC in 1949.
Surviving are: her Sons: Jacob M. Wright, Jr. (Carol) of Scottsdale, AZ and Alvin Wright (Sharon) of Gilbert; Daughter: Martha G. "Trudy" Wright of Walterboro; Grandchildren: Tyler Wright (Natalie), Justin Wright, Miki Wright Keisler (Brian) and Hunter Wright. Great Grandchildren: Marin Wright, Loralei Keisler, Emerson Wright, Maddox Keisler, Isabella Keisler and Beckett Wright. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Jacob M. Wright and by 9 sisters: Caroline, Christabel, Marian, Elizabeth, Gertrude, her twin Sara, Kathryn, Joyce and Wilma and 1 brother William Dowling, Jr.
Eleanor took much pride in caring for her family and providing fabulous meals of fresh vegetables straight from the huge garden that she and Jake grew. Summers were spent picking, shelling and canning enough for an army. She also loved flower gardening and arranging flowers for her church. She was a member of Varnville United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and choir member. Eleanor and her twin sister Sara provided meals for the "Young at Heart" for many years. She loved getting together with her sisters at Edisto Beach where they shared recipes, books and lots of laughs. Eleanor spent her later years in Gilbert and Lexington near her son, Alvin where she enjoyed family time with her grands & great grands. Reading was a passion and she was still reading romance novels at 99. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral Services will be 2 PM Sunday, November 5, 2023 at the Varnville United Methodist Church located at 126 Main Street, conducted by Pastor Jack Hutto with burial in the Varnville Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Memorials may be directed to Varnville United Methodist Church, PO Box 45, Hampton, SC 29924.
