Eleanor Clarke Baker

Eleanor Clarke Baker, 69, passed away peacefully at home on Estill Beach Circle in Bluffton, SC on Thursday, May 23, 2024, after an extended illness.

She was born in Savannah, Georgia on November 26, 1954, and was the youngest daughter of George Clarke and Alethia Cecilia Williams Baker of Estill, SC. She is survived by her sisters Mary Catherine Baker Plowden (Moultrie) of Walterboro, SC and Cecilia Ann Baker McKenzie (David) of Garnett, SC, Nephews William Harper, III (Bill 3 ) of Bluffton, Dr. David Hutchinson McKenzie, junior (Dr. Michelle) of Estill, Nieces Cecilia Ashley McKenzie Stephens (Rob) of Spartanburg, SC, and Colonel Mary McKenzie Gutierrez  (Lt. Colonel Michael) of Fairfax Station, Virginia, Great-nieces McKenzie Elizabeth Drennan of Spartanburg and Madelyn Marie McKenzie of Estill, and Great-nephews Joseph David McKenzie of Estill and Garrett Hutchinson Gutierrez of Fairfax Station, and Ashley Gunnin of Charleston, SC, Bill 3's lifelong best friend.

She was predeceased by her parents and her infant sister, Jennie Clarke Baker.

Eleanor was raised by her loving family, the village of Estill, and the Lawtonville Baptist Church community. She attended Estill public schools, Patrick Henry Academy, and graduated from the University of South Carolina.

She enjoyed a long career in retail where she cherished her daily interactions with her customers and co-workers, many who became close friends. The family is appreciative of the support and assistance of her Estill Beach and Bluffton friends and neighbors who showered her with favors and fellowship. Eleanor was particularly grateful for Bill's love, support, and dedication to her welfare through the years. Much of her daily joy was with their little dog, Echo.

Details of Eleanor's final farewell will be announced by the family later. Her ashes will be scattered on the May River per her wishes.
