Ed Shaffer

After an extended stay in the hospital, William Edward "Ed" Shaffer passed away surrounded by family on May 18, 2021.  He was 83 years old.

Mr. Shaffer was born August 13, 1937 in Hampton County, a son of the late Noah and Ruby Thomas Shaffer.  He had worked as a Union Carpenter in New York State for most of his career.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Ed.  He enjoyed spending summers in Upstate New York and making sure he got there early enough to plant a summer garden.  At the end of the day, he loved to sit on the porch and listen to Christian or old country music.  Live music was always a treat for him to hear, especially when his sons played it.  He enjoyed assisting his sons with any of their endeavors and would often come to the rescue by bringing the right tool or giving advice.  Friday night meant fish fry's, but only if it didn't interfere with watching one of his grandchildren play the sport of the season.  He never wanted to miss a sporting event or recital.  He was devoted to his wife by taking her to doctor appointments and making sure she was well cared for.  He was the oldest member of the Schaffer/Shaffer clan and will be greatly missed.  The family is grateful for eternity when we will all be together again.

Surviving are his sons: Robert Shaffer and wife Cassie of Blairsville, Georgia, William Shaffer and wife Kirstyn of Geneva, Florida, Richard Shaffer and wife Heather of Sanford, Florida, John Shaffer and wife Jeannine of Lake Mary, Florida and James Shaffer and wife Joitsa of Sterling, New York.  There are 18 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.  Besides his parents, Mr. Shaffer was predeceased by  his wife, Ruth Kay Barnes Shaffer; a son, Daniel Shaffer; brothers, Charles, Larry, Johnny and Benjamin Shaffer; and a sister, JoAnn Shaffer.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Spirit of Life Ministries at 1 PM with burial in the Shaffer – Hull Cemetery near Cummings, conducted by Rev. David Schaffer and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.

Visitation will be Saturday beginning at 12 noon at the Church prior to the service.
