Mrs. Alice Rebecca Gooding Chafin, 85, of Willard Street in Hampton died Monday afternoon, November 30, 2020 at the Summerville Community Hospice House in Summerville.

Mrs. Chafin was born March 30, 1935 in Varnville, a daughter of the late Claude Lenox Gooding and Alma Givens Gooding.  She was a graduate of Winthrop College and had taught school for 45 years in different areas around the state, retiring in Hampton County.  Mrs. Chafin was a member of Hampton United Methodist Church where she was active with many church activities.  She enjoyed bird watching, college football, gardening and being with her grand-dogs, Wilson and Hudson.  She was the widow of William Boyce Chafin, Jr.

Surviving is her son: Brad Chafin and wife Jennifer of Bryant Pond, Maine; daughter: Beth Chafin of Hampton; and sisters: Anne G. Brandt of Varnville and Ruth G. Womack and husband Paul of Atlanta; brother-in-law:  Charles Chafin and wife Amelia of Washington, Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services for the immediate family will be held at Hampton United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Lex McDonald with a public graveside service at 2 PM in the Hampton Cemetery on Friday, December 4, 2020 conducted by Rev. Tyler Strange and Rev. Ross Chellis.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 3, from 4 to 7 PM at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hampton United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 45, Hampton, SC 29924.  At the family's request, please adhere to the COVID-19 recommendations at the visitation and services.
